Setting up Sharepoint on SQL Server

You should always create a new SQL instance for the Sharepoint databases to separate them from your other databases. This is because SP requires you to change the Max Degree of Parallelism to 1 for its instance. You probably want to leave this setting at 0 for your other databases, so that's why Sharepoint should have its own instance.
